Village Life June
The cold, wet and windy weather of early May did not favour our annual plant sales;
nevertheless, we had two extremely busy weekends. Vegetables and perennials proved
to be very popular which is probably evidence of people both, “growing their own”
and going in for more sustainable planting, rather than spending a fortune on bedding
plants. Perhaps, as a consequence of this, we were left with much bedding. The
plant fairs are organised and supported by the men who were members of what was Stocksbridge
Garden Society. When they lost their original premises some years ago they came
up to Bolsterstone and enlisted the help of the Community Group with the sales. This
year, for the first time, the sales sustained a loss which was fortunately covered
by some profit made in previous years. It’s an ill wind, however, and our village
beds and community garden have benefited from the left-
Our Community Garden is now operating to capacity with nine gardeners, each with varying degrees of experience, all working their own plots and helping in any way they can with the borders and general tidying. The garden will soon be inspected and judged for the Lord Mayor’s Award and we hope to do as well as we did last year when we won the gold award for the best in category.
At last we are able to use Morehall Lane again. What joy not to have to make the
long detour round via Deepcar or over the speed humps along the reservoir road. An
additional bonus has been the resurfacing of the village from Cockshot Lane up Folderings
and along to Yew Trees Lane. Not just the road either – but edge to edge. The
verges on Stone Moor Road have been mowed, as requested, and picked free of litter
after our recent work morning. Warm sunshine and some heavy showers have worked
their magic on the flower beds and troughs and all should be neat, tidy, blooming
and blossoming for St. Mary’s Village Fayre on Saturday 4th July. This is Bolsterstone’s
biggest event of the year and is held by the Church for its own funds and that of
nominated charities. The footpath field is already mown and will be used as a car
park (entrance just opposite the pub car park). The whole of the village centre
will be taken over by stalls offering a variety of goods -
